In many companies the key challenge on sustainability is outside the direct remit of the own company. Whether it is around Human Rights questions, like forced labour, slavery, equal treatment and or working conditions or it is around greenhouse gases and pollution measures. Many decisions made daily by your procurement team have more impact on your footprint and your reputation, than probably most other processes in your company.
Due to the above and further pushed by increased legislation, time to step up the capability of your procurement team in sustainable procurement.
Having managed procurement teams at frontrunners in sustainable procurement, with top ratings in sustainable procurement at many rating agencies, including EcoVadis (only a few companies score 90 / 100 points on sustainable procurement), we know what is required to get there and stay ahead of the exciting but challenging journey.
Do not expect your procurement team to just do this “on top” of their daily work, ensure you build their capabilities and your tools, organisation and processes for success. Ensure your KPI’s reflect sustainability, make it part of your supplier score cards and ensure you start making sourcing decisions, product development, supplier approvals are synchronised and aligned to this success.
If you know what to do, it is not difficult in itself, but it does require a change of focus, an aligned set of action and a lot of change management internally and for sure externally with your suppliers.
